Did you know that June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day and that a host of discovery activities will be organized across the country? As part of National Indigenous History Month, which is celebrated in June in Canada, this special day is included in the Canadian festivities that start off the summer season, along with Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Canada Day and Canadian Multiculturalism Day.
As health workers involved in First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities in the Great North, we want to take part in this day of Indigenous culture at Premier Soin Nordik!
What Is National Indigenous Peoples Day?
Above all the festive and cultural aspects of National Indigenous Peoples Day, this day marks first and foremost the recognition by the Canadian Constitution of the Métis, Inuit and First Nations, an important step in the fight for the recognition of these communities having or not having ceded their territories in the past.
June 21st is also the discovery of a cultural richness often overlooked by Canadians, the celebration of cultural diversity, but as well the validation of exceptional achievements made in the past or in progress!
Why June 21st? Day of the summer solstice, this date remains significant as the longest of the year, but again because many communities and indigenous groups have chosen it for various celebrations over the centuries.
Why Create National Indigenous Peoples Day?
As mentioned earlier, the purpose of this day is to recognize and celebrate the culture, traditions, contributions, and achievements of Indigenous people.
Requested by the National Indian Brotherhood in 1982 and the Sacred Assembly National Conference of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous People in 1995, a First Peoples Day was also recommended by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, in 1995 alike.
Following consultations with the concerned communities, it was finally proclaimed in 1996.
